The Quick Answer
If you are a beginner, start reading the Bible in Genesis to understand how the world was designed and how humanity fell. Then, jump directly to the Gospel of John to see God’s solution. Grab a readable translation like the NKJV, and try listening to an audiobook while you read to build the habit.
If you try to read the Bible like any other regular book, you are going to come face-to-face with a lot of failure.
I think that is exactly why people get so intimidated by it. They pick it up, they start on page one, and they hit an invisible roadblock they can’t even see. The reality is, the Bible is a spiritual document. If you try to approach it without asking the Master Architect to help you understand it, you’re going to get frustrated and walk away.
But nobody picks up a Bible for the first time and just comes away knowing everything. The beauty of the blueprints is that they are shallow enough for a kid to understand the main concepts, but deep enough that you can spend a lifetime studying them and never hit the bottom.
You just have to know where to start.
Why You Should Jump from Genesis to John
A lot of people will tell you to start reading in the book of John. I actually love sending people to Genesis first.
You need to go through Genesis to get an understanding of how God formed everything, how we fell away, and the promise He made right there in the wreckage to bring us back. Once you see that setup, then you jump to John.
For me, I was reading through John when the lights finally came on. I realized that John starts exactly how Genesis starts. And right about halfway through the book, it hit me: Jesus wasn’t just a guy. He was God in the flesh. He was the Creator stepping down into the creation to do what we were never able to do on our own.
If you think about it, in Genesis, the collapse started when the fruit was taken off the tree. In John, Jesus pays the full price to fix it by being nailed to the tree.
How to Actually Do It (Without Quitting)
It is completely fine to start small. Read three or four lines a day. As you do that, you will gain the capacity to understand more. Here are a few practical ways to get started:
1. Find a translation you can actually read.
You don’t need to start with the heavy old English of the King James Version. I suggest getting something right in the middle between word-for-word and a paraphrase. The New King James Version (NKJV) or the NIV are great places to start.
2. Use the Audiobook Hack.
When I first started, I had trouble reading. So, I turned on an audio Bible and listened to it while I followed along with my eyes in the physical book. Getting that double information—hearing it and reading it at the same time—helped me retain so much more in those early months.
The Crash Protocol (When You Mess Up)
When you first really get into the scriptures, there is this sweet “honeymoon” phase. God is revealing Himself to you, you are experiencing His peace, and it’s a beautiful moment.
But eventually, life gets messy. You miss a few days of reading. You fall back into an old habit. And the very first instinct you’ll have is to do exactly what Adam and Eve did in Genesis: you will want to hide.
The greatest enemy to a believer is not the sin itself; it’s the shame that causes us to run away when we know we’ve messed up.
Think about it like calling 911. Imagine dialing for an ambulance, but giving the dispatcher the location of where you think you should be, instead of where you are actually at. The rescue unit arrives on scene, and you aren’t there.
That is exactly what shame does to us. God is more than willing to meet us in our mess, but we have to give Him honest coordinates. He created us with biology. He knows we eat, we process dirt, and we expel waste. He knows life is designed to be messy. You don’t have to pretend to be perfect for Him to rescue you.
Don’t give Him fake coordinates. Step out of the bushes, admit where you are, and let Him meet you there.
